Cameron Brown concludes case, leading prosecution team in high profile EncroChat drug trafficking case
Cameron Brown KC, leading Serena Gates and Hannah Gladwell, have concluded the prosecution of a crime group who have been jailed for over 111 Years in a drug smuggling case including a plan to import 1.2 tonnes of cocaine, using a yacht and sea containers and actual importation of over 650 kgs cannabis into the UK.
Border Force officers intercepted 408kg of cannabis hidden in machinery at Tilbury Port and 268kg concealed in toolboxes at Southampton. The operation relied on fake companies and fraudulent payments to facilitate the shipments.
Chelmsford Crown Court sentenced McClenaghan (30 years), Talbot (23), Braithwaite (22), Magee (20), Campbell (10), and Ward (6.5). Karl Richter is due to be sentenced in October.
The case was part of Operation Venetic, a nationwide initiative launched in 2020 by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in collaboration with international partners to dismantle the EncroChat encrypted communications network.
RLC counsel were instructed by the CPS SEOCID with Olivia Hagger of 5KBW also instructed as part of the prosecution team.

Cameron Brown KC appears on the latest podcast hosted by Hattie Suvari at Get Legally Speaking to discuss the case, his own appearance as leading Counsel for the Crown in the Supreme Court where he led the Prosecution team in its successful appeal against the adverse Court of Appeal decision. The Court of Appeal’s decision severely restricted the scope for Courts to make confiscation orders in CV fraud cases. The Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision, significantly widening the scope to make such orders.

BBC covers one of Cameron Brown KC’s cases - Big Little Crimes - April 2024
Artem Terzyan and Deivis Grochiatskij were each charged with two counts of money laundering, for which they were found guilty following a seven-week trial at Kingston CC in September 2021. £10m of that laundering came from fraudulent Bounce Back Loans following the introduction of the government backed pandemic business loan scheme in 2020. He is an expert in sports regulatory practice chairing complex meetings, disciplinary panels and tribunals. He sits as a judge for the England Golf and the Lawn Tennis Association, in relation to their disciplinary and safeguarding cases and as an independent Specialist Panel Member on The FA’s Safeguarding Review Panel.
